Welcome to the Curlsistahood!!!
Here is the info that you requested:
Lack of moisture is the leading cause of hair breakage within the black hair community. A common misconception among Curlsistas is that oils add moisture to hair. Oils can soften and add shine, but they won't actually moisturize your hair. The job of an oil is to prevent internal moisture loss and prevent external moisture from entering the hair shaft. As a result if your hair is dry and you put oil on it, you'll then have shiny, dry hair. The best moisturizer for hair is actually water. It is the universal moisturizer. Any good moisturizer you buy will have water as the first ingredient.
Here are three easy ways to add and retain moisture in your hair:
Mist and Seal Your Hair Daily
The easiest way to continue to add moisture to your tresses is by misting your hair daily with a spray bottle filled with water and oil. Pay particular attention to your ends. The water will hydrate and the oil will seal in the moisture. Do this at least twice per day in the morning and before you go to bed.
Pre-poo Before You Shampoo
Did you know that “squeaky” clean hair is actually not ideal? Many shampoos strip our hair of its natural oils needed for shape, shine, and retaining the moisture. This is why pre-pooing is so essential. Pre-pooing is the process of applying oils and/or conditioners to the hair before shampooing to prevent the complete lose of all necessary oil in your hair. Honey, coconut oil, and olive oil are examples of great natural pre-poo treatments.
Wash and Deep Condition Before Applying Heat
Various CurlSistas use flat irons, curling irons, and blow dryers to shape and straighten their hair. The trade off of using heat is the loss of moisture in our hair. Hair that is washed and deep conditioned prior to heat styling provides the added moisture it needs to straighten it with minimal breakage and hydration loss.
