/Editor's Note/ Kamilah has a presence that shines so bright in her photos, which totally makes sense since her motto is "keep shining". I love her vibrant pops of color and that smile! Such a pleasure to feature her as CurlSista of the Day.xo.Joy
Name // Kamilah Benjamin, 25
Where do you live?
Brooklyn, however recently relocated to ATL.
What do you do?
I am Graphic Designer, I specialize in branding and strategy.
What's your background?
I am West Indian. Both my mother and father are from the beautiful Island of Jamaica.
How long have you been a natural gal?
All my lifffeee! :) Well, sort of...When I was young, my mother put a texturizer in my hair because it was extremely thick and I would bawl in pain just at the sight of a comb. I was super tender headed and hated doing my hair. She is a hairstylist, so to combat that, she put in a little kiddie perm. I look back at my 3rd grade school picture, and I feel like I had the Michael Jackson 'Who's Bad' wave pattern. Quite hilarious. But, I would say, honestly, no chemicals in my hair since about 5th or 6th grade.
What do you love about being natural?
I believe being natural completely is a reflection of my personality. Its fun, stands out and does what it wants. I love the diversity of natural hair. Some days it can be straight, but it will always revert back to its natural form. Its something that cannot be hidden. Being natural, especially in my field, working in corporate offices, is certainly a statement and an expression. I don't feel as cookie-cutter, because I am different, and its completely natural. I don't have to try to look this way, it just is, and its beautiful. It's definitely about embracing what God gave me and rocking it to its fullest.
What's your hair regimen?
Ha! I get this question all the time. Honestly, my regiment is so simple. I don't spend a lot of money on products and trying different ones. I wash my hair about once a week with shampoo, The other days, if I use a spray bottle to get it a little wet to apply product. When I do wash it, I will rinse and replace conditioner... But I leave it in. While still in the shower, I shake my hair to allow the curls to separate. The trick for me is the drying process, not the product (although they do help). When I have time, air drying is my best friend. It allows my curls to just form into themselves naturally. When my hair is partially or even fully air dried, I then use a blow dryer WITH A DIFFUSER
. Direct heat is not our friend, so the diffuser helps to dry the roots which helps bring in the volume and shape that I love.
Top 5 fave hair products?
As stated before, I am not a product junkie. I keep it so
simple and stick to what works for me. I'm sure there are products out there that people swear by, and I'm sure they all work extremely well, but for me, honestly, I have found that Shea Moisture Styling Milk
is the TRUTH. I dilute it a bit with water to allow the product to stretch and last longer because the bottle is kind of small. I really also like Deva Curl Angel Light gel
. I apply that in the shower sometimes during my "shake process" to further allow the curls to define themselves. I also use Herbal Essence conditioners
, its inexpensive and it works well as a leave in. Lastly, Olive Oil Edge Control
to lay down those baby hairs :)
How do you describe your style?
That's a super interesting question. I would say I'm minimal chic. I look for items that have impact and arrange my outfit around those one or two things. I love statement pieces like watches
and shoes. I believe simplicity breeds the notion of polished. Coco Chanel once said, "before leaving the house, a lady should look in the mirror and remove one accessory." I recently cut my hair shorter than its ever been, so lately my face has been my favorite accessory!
What are your fave stores to shop?
, I'm getting into online shopping more as well, learning to find those deals, deals, deals.
One item you can't leave home without?
NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer
AKA "The Creamy Crack". Hands down, the best foundation/concealer I've ever used. Just a couple of dabs and I'm shining.
I wish for a life where everyday I can look around and be grateful for something God has given me.
Fave things to do on the weekend?
A good brunch with the girls talking about life, sunshine, dancing around my house with loud music, some football (during football season), day parties, napping, catching up on ratchet TV (haha, did I admit that?) Yes, I can sit and watch Real Housewives of ATL or other terrible things for my brain and soul, I admit it. :(
What makes you smile?
Good memories make me smile, always.
What are some words of wisdom that you live by?
A simple one: "Keep Shining".
